Porsche pulls the plug on petrol Macan & there’s no immediate replacement

One of Porsche’s biggest success stories is nearing its final chapter. The Porsche Macan, in its petrol-powered form, is set to bow out by summer 2026, leaving a significant gap in the brand’s lineup.

Confirmed during an earnings call by CFO Jochen Breckner, the decision isn’t entirely by choice. Stricter regulations and the increasing complexity of keeping combustion models compliant have made continuing production a costly challenge. Rather than stretch the lifecycle further, Porsche is pulling the plug altogether.

For now, the focus shifts entirely to the electric Macan. Globally, the transition seems to be gaining traction, with EV versions accounting for over half of total Macan sales last year. However, the picture isn’t as clear-cut everywhere, especially in the U.S., where demand for the Porsche Macan petrol remains strong, and EV adoption is comparatively slower.

Crucially, this isn’t the end of combustion-powered SUVs from Stuttgart. Porsche is already working on a successor, reportedly sharing its underpinnings with the next-generation Audi Q5. The catch? It won’t arrive before 2028.
